Note: This is not meant to be hung so that may have been the issue for the other reviewer. You hang chicken feed so that they cannot scratch and scatter it but a waterer should be put on the ground, up on stones if you want it off the ground. I would expect it not only difficult for hens to drink out of if hung, but the handle is meant for carrying so it wouldn't hang straight...and obviously the weight of it would make it crack. 5 gallons is really heavy and no way can plastic rings hold that up over time; no plastic could hold up that weight on plastic grooves while the lid pulls against it...keep it on the ground; your chickens will be far happier that you did as well and there will be less water spillage which can breed bacteria on the ground.
I have had this waterer for about a year and it's the only one I've tried that I love.
A metal waterer should not be used due to freezing and to maintaining heat in the summer which grows parasites or bacteria.
The other plastic waterer I used you had to fill the top then FLIP it upside down, watching water fall all over you and the hens had to turn their heads sideways to drink.
This has a great large base that's also in an octagon shape so that more hens can gather around comfortably.
But the best part is how you fill it. If you don't read the directions you might not even notice what they did. There is a black knob that covers where the water comes out. You can either remove the clear plastic part from the base (it just pops out) to fill it or you can carry the whole thing by the lid to the hose. You keep the black cap on the spigot part when filling and when carrying...no water comes out. Then, after you put the waterer back down where it goes, you just take that cap off, screw it to a storage place on the white plastic part (as shown on the picture) and it stays there until it's time to fill again....NO having to turn the unit upside down like in many waterers.
Plus it holds LOTS of water and is still easy to carry due to the handle.
It should be noted even if you just have a couple hens, you should still clean this out regularly so that you never see yellow or green in the water. Mold is toxic to chickens and yellow means they have kicked some poo into it...lifting it slightly off the ground on flat stones helps eliminate that. If left unclean, parasites can hit their bodies as they drink or mold can hurt their kidneys and livers. Don''t just rinse it, but also take a sponge or even your hand and run it along the bottom to loosen any build up or slime which is bacteria.
A few drops of olive leaf extract also helps keep both the water and their bodies more parasite-free...I treat it about once a month even though I clean their waterer weekly.
