I am a novice koi enthusiast with a 600 Gallon outdoor pond in plenty of shade but receives a decent amount of sunlight during the afternoon hours with 5 koi I have had going on 3 years old. I built the pond this year because they had outgrown the smaller pond. I am using the tetra pressure bio filter and the 1900 gph pump for the filter and my waterfall. I also have a two matured water lilly plants that total 11 pads to help with the nitrate cycle. I ran the pond for a week with half of the water from the old pond to build up a bio system and it remained clear. Then I added the koi. About a week after introducing the koi to the new pond and feeding them on a regular basis the water turned green. I could only see the koi when they came to the very top for food. and at night I could see a faint glow of the 4 pond lights. I was torn at this point as many blogs and posts were saying that the green algae is beneficial to the koi and that it is only us pond owners who desire crystal clear water. so I lived with it for a bit hoping it would work itself out and testing the water every few days. My ammonia was testing just above 0 ppm my nitrates were the same just above 0 ppm and the ph was ideal at 7.4 - 7.6 ppm and staying consistent without any drops and spikes. Many post were saying the uv lights are very effective and will kill the algae but will also kill the beneficial bacteria as well (how true that is I don't know but it makes sense, I doubt the light can choose what it wants to kill and what it doesn't. That being said the tetra blocks can cause skin irritation with a disclaimer that says never eat fish from a pond that has these blocks in them due to the chemicals being introduced to the water.- odd disclaimer but it gets the point across of chemicals in the water- so they both have pros and cons). I was not enjoying my green pond so i looked at the tetra 9 watt uv light and it said my pump would fit but was exceeding the max flow of water passing by the light to be beneficial. So on a whim I purchased the blocks I figured couple bucks what the heck. I introduced two blocks into the water on Thursday and brought out my test kit to test all levels again: low ph, high ph, ammonia & nitrates. No change at all over the weekend in the color of the water or any of the levels. Tuesday the water starting cearing up and Wednesday it was crystal Clear I could see all the way to the bottom which in the deepest part is just over 3 1/2 ft. Still no change in the chemical composition and the fish are very active. The blocks are supposed to last 30 days. In the long run I will wind up paying more for these having to buy a new box every 2-4 months(I am going to cut back to one block every 30 days now that the water is clear to see if it works) then a uv light would cost but for now I am 100% satisfied.
